Why the Shih Tzu is the answer

The Labrador, Border Collie, and Chihuahua all have longer muzzles that help them cool off. The Shih Tzu is brachycephalic (flat-faced) — narrowed nostrils, a smaller windpipe, and extra throat tissue mean it can’t pant efficiently, so it overheats far faster in summer.

Keep flat-faced friends cool

Keep them indoors with A/C during peak heat, walk only in the cool morning and evening hours, always have fresh water within reach, and watch closely for heavy panting or labored breathing. When in doubt, cool down and call your vet.
