Why the Shih Tzu is at higher risk

Flat-faced breeds have narrowed nostrils, smaller windpipes, and extra soft tissue in the throat. Since dogs cool down mainly by panting, these pups simply can’t move air efficiently enough to beat the heat — so they can overheat in conditions other dogs handle with ease.

Keep flat-faced friends cool

Keep them indoors with A/C during peak heat, walk only in the cool morning and evening hours, always have fresh water within reach, and watch closely for heavy panting or labored breathing. When in doubt, cool down and call your vet.
