We recommend three rounds of vaccinations for puppies when getting their puppy shots:

Puppy Package #1: 6 – 8 weeks

Puppy Package #2: 10 – 12 weeks

Puppy Package #3: 14 – 16 weeks

After these three rounds of puppy shots, puppies have finished their vaccinations for the year. We recommend keeping your puppy on heartworm preventative for their entire lives (especially in Texas, where heartworms are prevalent year-round).

First Puppy Package Information (6 – 8 weeks)

The first round of shots contains only one vaccination – the DHPP vaccination, also known as DA2PP, the 4-way, or the Distemper/Parvo vaccination. This is the most important vaccination for puppies – parvovirus is still fairly common in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and kills 1 in 4 infected puppies, along with being expensive to treat. The first package also contains an oral liquid for deworming (hookworms & roundworms, which puppies are often born with) and a heartworm tablet that will last for a month.

Second Puppy Package Information (10 – 12 weeks)

The second round of shots contains a DHPP booster and a couple of new vaccinations that the puppy will be old enough for: the Lepto and Bordetella shots. The Lepto vaccination protects against Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can kill puppies & can even spread to humans. It’s rarer than Parvovirus, but still shows up in both urban and rural areas, spread by animals such as rats, mice, squirrels, raccoons, and other mammals. The Bordetella vaccination protects against kennel cough, a disease that isn’t fatal, but very contagious. Nearly all boarders & groomers require the Bordetella vaccination. The second puppy package also contains another round of deworming & another heartworm tablet to last the month.

Third Puppy Package Information (14 – 16 weeks)

The third puppy package contains another DHPP booster, a Lepto booster, and the Rabies vaccination. Puppies must be at least 3 months old to receive the Rabies, but by law they only need to have it by 4 months (which is usually when we give the vaccination). The Lepto vaccination is a booster of the one received in the 2nd puppy package. Neither Rabies nor Bordetella need booster shots, so we only give them each once throughout all 3 packages. The third puppy vaccinations package also contains the third and final round of deworming and one more heartworm tablet to last the month.

This finishes the puppy’s vaccinations for the year. After these rounds of vaccinations, they’re protected and only need their annual boosters. We also recommend purchasing a 6 month or year’s supply of heartworm prevention after the third round of puppy shots.

Important! If you don’t know your puppy’s age, just bring him by any of our clinics & we can give you an approximate, estimated age! We will then recommend a package based off of his previous vaccination history and age.
